Apr 8th | Saudade (the presence of absence)

Special four-day performance at the North of History gallery. Saudade (the presence or absence), untranslatable from Portuguese roughly means the melancholic nostalgia for something you’ve never had. Through an impulse and movement-based performance, this work realizes that each passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. That when your life moves on to the next scene, theirs flickers in place, wrapped in a cloud of backstory and inside jokes and characters strung together with countless other stories that you’ll never be able to see. How the consequences of a one-chance encounter leave you lost in an all-too-real daydream of possibly. A gaze toward the destination board at Grand Central Station or JFK sweeps you into the alternate realities that could happen if that ticket is purchased. The dream of yourself becoming almost anything yet carrying on invisibility, bearing the accumulated weight of your own ambitions, routines, friends, triumphs, mistakes, worries and inherited craziness. And all the others who orbit you. Entire stories you’ll never know exists. In which you might appear only once. As an extra sipping coffee in the background. As a blur of traffic on the highway. As a lighted window at dusk.
